Pencil
A Glimmer of Hope

Evangelical Christianity, in the opinion of this writer, has largely made a mockery of itself in the incessant waging of culture wars against all the wrong things. When I consider comtemporary Christianity, I think of bigotry for homosexuals, a complete ignorance about the value of the separation of church and state, backward attitudes about human sexuality like abstinence-only sex "education", a backward distrust of science, a bloodlust for war, a total disregard for the poor and downtrodden, a deep love of guns, and the dangerous mixing of religion and jingoistic nationalism, to name a few. In short, I can think of almost nothing good about evangelical Christianity.

I don't think it always used to be that way in this country. This article in the New York Times gave me a reason to be hopeful that not all Christians are utterly insane. Check it out.

This article was refreshing to say the least. In a time when most try to latch onto what religion they know as their means of sanity it is heartbreaking when latching on to religion means defending your pollitical views or feeling "less than American". The mega church I attend also preaches some very raw messages, and doesnt hide pollitical unhappiness, despite the feelings of members or visitors. I feel it is very important that America know being christian does not mean being Republican...and vise versa. Thank you Wester.
